8 Website Design Trends For 2018

8 Web Design Trends For 2018

Website design, as a digital medium, is far more susceptible to change in technology than traditional print, and since the majority of internet users use smartphones exclusively nowadays, it’s safe to assume that 2018 will be all about being mobile-friendly. That being said, web designers are looking to create sites that are mobile user-friendly, appealing, innovative, and adaptable to every device. With that in mind, here are some web design trends that we think will take over in 2018 when it comes to optimally designing a website.

  • Drop Shadow and Depth
  • Saturated and Vibrant Color Schemes
  • Mobile is #1
  • Custom Illustrations
  • Bold, Big Typography
  • Serif Over San Serif
  • Broken Grid Layouts
  • More Interactions and Animations

1.Drop Shadows and Depth

Drop shadows are nothing new to web design. In fact, they’ve been used since forever, so why mention them now? We think they’re important, simply because with the development of web browsers in the past few years, we see a lot of exciting variations. That being said, with parallax layouts and grids, web designers are now playing with shadows more than ever before, in order to create optical illusion and depth. Shadowplay not only enhances user experience by putting an emphasis wherever you want, but it also increases the aesthetics of the website. Simply put, it’s an incredibly versatile technique that should be taken advantage of.

2.Bold and Vibrant Color Schemes

We think that colors are everything, as they can either make or break your website. In the past, a lot of designers were stuck using web-safe color schemes, but that doesn’t seem to be the case in 2018. In fact, its the exact opposite – designers have started using more and more vibrant, vivid, strong colors.

This is mainly due to the fact that phone screens and monitors have come a long way, and are now better at reproducing richer colors. This is ideal for newer brands that want to instantly grab the attention of their visitors, and brands that want to set themselves apart from the traditional and “web-safe”.

3.Mobile is #1

As aforementioned, mobile users are definitely the majority of internet users. Nowadays, almost everyone orders and shops from their smartphone. Naturally, designers have to adjust their web sites to tend to their users’ needs. This includes designing a mobile-friendly menu, submenu, banners, footers and everything in between. But how can all of that be accomplished on a small screen?

Simple – it’s all about minimization. This means that you might have to remove the beautiful but large photos, and instead use smaller icons so that you can save space. Not only is this more practical for your users, but it also allows you to quickly identify and fix user experience issues, as micro-interactions provide immediate feedback on your users’ actions.

4.Custom Illustrations

Illustrations have become quite trendy lately, as they’re a great, versatile way for creating images that are friendly, playful and fun. More importantly, illustrations add personality to your website design, and an experienced artist can make them so that they’re tailored to your specific brand’s tone. Not only are illustrations great for businesses that focus on being fun and energetic, but they can make businesses that are otherwise considered “serious” appear more approachable to a wider audience. Regardless of your brand identity, you can probably find an illustration style to match it.

5.Bold, Big Typography

Typography has always been a very powerful tool in every aspect of web design. It can evoke emotion, set the tone of the website, create personality, all while getting the important message across. And due to device resolutions becoming sharper, an increased use in custom fonts is expected. Besides Internet Explorer, other browser now support custom fonts. The trend of contrasting serif and sans serif, and using large letters improve user experience help create dynamic parallels and most importantly, keep the user on your website. Moreover, fonts and headers are a crucial SEO element, making them even more important. We expect a lot of web designers to take advantage of this and we’ll probably see many web sites featuring large fonts in creative typefaces.

6.Serif Over San Serif

Back in the day, using serif over sans serif didn’t make a lot of sense, as there was poor font support and non-retina screens were the norm. But as font rendering and screen technologies became more robust, we’re slowly seeing the rise of serif fonts. Serif fonts provide an element of elegance, and their polished style emits warm energy, which makes website design look much better.

7.Broken Grid Layouts

One of the biggest changes in 2017 was the implementation of unconventional, asymmetrical “broken” layouts, and the trend is still going strong into 2018. What makes broken grid layouts so appealing is that they’re distinctive and unique. Broken grid layouts create a unique user experience that can help brands set themselves apart. Even though traditional businesses might not be interested in them, bigger brands that can afford to experiment a bit will definitely be expecting some amazing, unique ideas from their web designers.

8.Integrated Animations

With the advancement of browser technology, more websites are shifting from static images to animations as a way to engage with their users. Smaller animations can be very helpful in this regard, and significantly improve user experience through the website. For example, animated graphics can entertain the users in different ways – for instance, while waiting for a page to load. Moreover, animations can be integrated to work with navigation, scrolling or they can be made the main focus of the entire web site, you just have to get creative.
